JANIE IS MY FAVOURITE PERSON EVAR!!!!!
OMG TEH OWL!!!!!!
Owls have always represented SG for me, almost more than chinese dragons have! ^_____________^ [img]graemlins/heart.gif[/img]
Awww Steenie, I'm glad that made you so happy!
I will keep my eyes peeled for another copy of this cd for you I must admit I do love the artwork on this particular cd
I always associate owls with learning, books and knowledge. It has also just occured to me that TV screens seem to be a popular (excuse the pun) metaphor with Darren don't they? We seem to have almost come full circle when you think about the cover of TTATS!
Given the conversation going on in the other thread about intelligent conversations being more prevalent in the early SG days, I'd say that owl makes for a very striking image It's like Darren receiving wisdom but on the TTATS cover there is simply a blank screen on the TV, as in the communication isn't getting through anymore.
I know that the owl is taken from the painting done by the mediaeval painter, Hieronymous Bosch of the Garden of Earthly Delights. The triptych depicts the history of the world and the progression of sin. The Garden of Delights in the centre illustrates a world deeply engaged in sinful pleasures. I guess this all ties in with Anne Rice's description of the world being described as a Savage Garden. The owl also appears on other cd covers like the Oz version of Break Me, Shake Me. I really love the artwork associated with the debut SG album. I thought it was incredibly clever and well thought out.
Here is a scan of the original painting. You can see the owl over to the right hand side of it, sitting atop a fruit which I think is a pomegranite which in mediaeval times was representative of fertility.
I don't really know what I'm rambling on about here, lol but the similarities and yet the differences suddenly became apparent to me. I think I know what I mean in my head but I can't seem to find the right words and phrases to express myself properly. I know there is far more symolism attached to both these pieces of artwork but this particular thought jumped out of my head today.

Wow Janie thanks for posting those.
I love that SG pic and the whole owl thing.
I love what you said about the TV screen and communication etc. It rings so true.

WOW! That Bosch artwork is so surreal. I could look at it for hours.
Awwww thanks for keeping an eye out ^_^ Nic is also helping me in that department, this is a bbs full of sweeties!
Well said Janie! ^_^ As well, the pomegranite is seen as a symbol of wisdom but also of temptation re: Persephone and how she ate 6 pomegranite seeds while in Hades, creating winter for 6 months every year
It does seem that Darren can't get way from staring at the TV, the image does pop up over and over LOL Even the infamous Cream article with him in eyeliner had him looking at a hotel TV, if my memory serves me LOL
Borsch's painting has been one of my favourite for years, even after i had to study it in Art History LOL
Blimey I've just been watching the Making of the Insatiable video and I'm struck by Darren's obsession with TV's! He's staring at one in this video too and thinking about there are references to TV screens and computer monitors in Crash and Burn too.
I guess these are such a ubiquitous part of modern communications these days.
